About
Short summarised CV of Vivienne Matthies-Boon (previously called Vivienne Boon):
INTERESTS:
- Middle Eastern Studies
- Islamic Political Thought
- Political Philosophy
- Critical Theory
- Democratisation
CURRENT RESEARCH FOCUS: My current research can be divided into two interconnected thematic strands. The first one critically investigates discourses of democracy - with particular reference to the Middle East and North African region (more specifically Egypt). I am interested in how democracy is rhetorically employed by political actors and what political philosophical world views are advanced on the political stage. The second focus of my research is on theories of modernity, justice and rights existent within the Frankfurt School tradition of critical theory and its relation to Middle Eastern political and societal processes. Here I am particularly interested in critiques of modernity and questions of socio-economic justice within the Egyptian context.
